The Wollongong Wolves have been presented the chance to play the Central Coast Mariners in a pre-A-League season trial game at WIN Stadium on the Saturday 6 October 2018.
As has been extensively reported globally, the world’s greatest ever sprinter, Usain Bolt is currently on trial with the Central Coast Mariners with a view to securing a professional playing contract. Come early October, Bolt will have had in excess of six weeks in a professional football training environment and will be looking to impress on the park.
In addition, the Central Coast Mariners have local Wollongong products Josh Macdonald, Jordan Murray and Corey Gameiro signed to their playing roster for the upcoming A-League season.
The Club is in talks with Destination Wollongong and the WIN Sports and Entertainment Centres in an attempt to bring the match to Wollongong.
However, such an event incurs stadium costs and the club is looking for corporate partners to support the match.
Club Chairman Tory Lavalle said: “This is a massive opportunity for the people of the South Coast to watch their local team take on an A-league club and one of the world’s greatest ever athletes.
"It is also a chance for our community to show their support for top level football and demonstrate to the game’s administrators that our region can and will support an A-League club.”
Wolves board member Chris Sheppard added: “We are actively looking for a corporate partner or partners to come on board to support this match.
"The event is sure to attract a lot of support and media interest and coverage not only nationally, but internationally. Media agencies throughout the world are reporting almost daily on every training session or practice match which Usain Bolt takes part in.
"Fox Sports are telecasting a trial match involving him this Friday night. This is a significant opportunity for business to leverage off the interest the match will generate.”
